The Prince Edward Island Breast Cancer Information Partnership (PEIBCIP) is an organization comprised of volunteers representing various organizations associated with breast cancer across Prince Edward Island. Since 1998, the PEIBCIP has worked to ensure accessible, reliable, and up-to-date information about early detection, treatment, and follow-up care to those affected by breast cancer on the Island.
The effects of breast cancer, on the individual as well as on family and community, are known first-hand by many members of the organization. Fifty per-cent of the Partnership’s members are breast cancer survivors.
“A lot of our members know the reality of breast cancer personally. This gives them a perspective and sensibility that really helps them reach out to, or be there for, newly diagnosed women,” explained Norah Smith of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Breast Cancer Screening Program. “These survivors have walked the walk themselves.”
Part of PEIBCIP's main service is providing their Sunflower Kits, which is an information kit prepared with the advice of women who have experienced breast cancer.
“The Sunflower Kits have been unbelievably successful,” said Smith, adding that they often provide comfort to individuals other than just the women who are dealing with the disease. The success of the Sunflower Kit initiative on PEI has inspired other provinces across Canada to adopt the use of the Kits as well.
